The wastewater treatment system model BIOKIT-SBR (sequencing batch reactor) consists of one or more biological reactors, which provide in a single tank for aeration through blowers, sedimentation, and discharge of biologically treated wastewater. The biological reactor, after the storage phase of the wastewater, is operated in a “batch” (discontinuous) manner for a predefined period, specifically established during the design phase, and then the clarified effluent, after adequate sedimentation (calm phase), is discharged from the biological reactor through the return pump to the receiving body of the discharge as required by the environmental code d.lgs 152/06 and various regional and local regulations. The SBR biological treatment plant also allows for the consolidation of all the basins necessary for a traditional activated sludge treatment plant into a single tank, including the secondary sedimentation tank, and therefore does not require any sludge recirculation.
The high concentration of bacterial colonies (sludge), up to double that of a traditional activated sludge treatment system, allows for not only a very high treatment capacity for the same volumes used but also a much more flexible operation, enabling rapid adaptation to various operational needs.
The characteristics of the wastewater treatment system model BIOKIT-SBR (sequencing batch reactor) allow for appropriate treatment of both domestic and assimilated users, characterized by continuous and discontinuous effluents, as well as small users of a few equivalent inhabitants and larger users with a high number of equivalent inhabitants (< 2000 ae) such as agritourisms, restaurants, small and large subdivisions, etc.
The BIOKIT-SBR (sequencing batch reactor) wastewater treatment system is also one of the most effective and suitable for treating industrial wastewater as long as it is biodegradable, even if characterized by high load discontinuity, such as wineries, dairies, slaughterhouses, cold cuts factories, meat processing and transformation activities, agricultural companies in general, and any type of animal farming.
These functional characteristics are one of the main advantages of wastewater treatment plants of this type, which have so far found wide application abroad, in the USA, Germany, Australia, etc., but in recent years also in Italy, in small community plants as well as in all fields of civil and assimilated application according to the parameters indicated in the environmental code d.lgs. 152/06 and in various regional regulations. Due to the significant economic advantages (reduction of both construction and management costs compared to conventional activated sludge treatment plants), in many cases, traditional activated sludge treatment plants or septic tanks have been converted to SBR systems.

IMPORTANT
European Regulation No. 305/11 has stipulated that this type of plant must also be certified according to the CE directive EN 12566-3 for both structural and functional parameters, the latter mandatory since July 1, 2013, through the mandatory purification performance test lasting at least 38 weeks.

Maintenance
Furthermore, poor operation of the primary treatment system can cause anomalies to any wastewater treatment system installed downstream of it, such as a phytodepuration system, a percolating filter treatment plant, a traditional or SBR activated sludge treatment plant, etc.
Periodic maintenance operations must be carried out by vacuum truck companies that will then have to dispose of the waste either at a landfill or at the public treatment plant.
More specific technical interventions, however, must be carried out by specialized personnel.
Indicative List of Advantages
- high resistance of bacterial colonies (sludge) to hydraulic and organic overloads
- excellent retention and concentration capacity of active biomass (up to double compared to traditional activated sludge treatment plants for the same volume)
- no biomass and nitrate recycling is required
- better oxygen transfer efficiency to all biomass present in the biological reactor
- better control of the bulking phenomenon
- treatment flexibility by changing the timing of the various phases (timing of the aeration phase and the calm phase without air insufflation)
- lower energy cost of treatment.
Indicative List of Disadvantages
- design of the SBR wastewater treatment system must be carried out by specialized personnel/companies.
- management and maintenance operations must be carried out by specialized personnel.
