In Lombardy, on March 29, 2019, a Regional Regulation regarding the discharge of domestic and urban wastewater came into force. The Regulation establishes obligations and prohibitions regarding the discharge of urban wastewater from agglomerations with fewer than 2000 equivalent inhabitants and concerning discharges from isolated settlements. In this regard, the Regulation, establishes that wastewater from isolated settlements with fewer than 200 equivalent inhabitants cannot be discharged into surface waters, unless the discharge comes from plants equipped with secondary treatment. In simpler terms, the discharge of domestic wastewater cannot occur without an appropriate treatment system: necessary to ensure compliance with the purification efficiency standards set by current laws. This Regulation, more than 2 years ago, clearly defined the methods for treating wastewater, specifying the approval procedures for treatment plants, regulating discharge controls, and providing specific references for pursuing greater protection of the subsoil, water resources, and the environment in general.
