The philosophy of Dorabaltea is based on the premise that every type of water is a precious resource and, as such, can be reused to reduce water waste, which is a critical issue that must be avoided. Starting from this concept, Dorabaltea has established itself as one of the leading companies in the sector focusing on water recovery and has developed several innovative devices that are revolutionizing the market. One of these devices is the Beasy system, one of the most efficient greywater recovery systems that, thanks to an advanced yet proven system for almost 40 years, is capable of treating it to make it reusable for non-potable purposes. In the following paragraphs, we will analyze how to save toilet flushing water and how this innovative system works. First, however, let’s focus more on greywater and the importance of reusing it intelligently.
Greywater: why it is important to recover it
Every day we use, or rather waste, a large amount of water without worrying about water waste. For proper management of the water cycle, it is essential not only to reduce consumption but also to avoid wasting precious drinking water and therefore not to use more than what is actually necessary. To prevent excessive and indiscriminate use of drinking water, we must recycle that water which would otherwise be unusable, such as greywater from showers, bathtubs, and sink drains. This is lower quality water, but it can be useful for non-potable purposes. In our homes, drinking water, taken from the public network, is used indiscriminately for toilet tanks or for washing food, a condition that leads to excessive water waste. Domestic wastewater should instead be recovered, as it contains easily degradable organic substances and manageable bacterial loads. How to reuse greywater? It can be used for other purposes and in other contexts, such as for flushing toilets, for fire protection systems, for feeding tanks and fountains, for laundries, and for air conditioning system circuits. To treat greywater, specific devices are needed, such as the Beasy system, which returns pure water and includes a disinfection system entirely devoid of bacteria.
The Beasy system, the winning partner for greywater recovery
Once we understand the importance of greywater recovery, let’s get to know the Beasy system, which bears the signature of Dorabaltea®. Beasy is a treatment and recovery system for greywater, coming entirely from the shower and sink in the bathroom. The treated water is naturally not potable but is reusable for flushing toilets. This system operates simply yet efficiently and does not require electricity. Greywater from the bathroom sink and shower is treated based on a well-studied principle consisting of a bed of filtering material. Structurally, the Beasy system consists of a single tank made of rotomolded polyethylene, which contains:
- a septic tank equipped with inlet and outlet pipes made of polyethylene;
- a filter made of plastic material;
- an aerobic percolator containing variable-sized supports made of pre-treated volcanic rock filtering fiber.
The water is then disinfected through a chlorination process and stored in a dedicated tank for reuse in toilets, thus contributing to saving toilet water. The water supply tank for toilet tanks must also have a water supply from the aqueduct to be added to the treated water to ensure the supply of toilet tanks in case of a lack of shower and sink water. Thanks to this process, the treated water is ready for civil reuse while fully respecting the technical characteristics of the system and project data. Greywater from the shower and sink must be channeled into the system. To ensure proper operation, maintenance phases are simple, infrequent, and can be performed in self-control. It is advisable to periodically check the wear state of the effluent filter and the bags containing the natural rock fiber. Additionally, it is necessary to ensure that the inlet pipe for greywater into the system is not blocked by inert material that may have been mistakenly discharged into the system. The device comes with an installation manual that explains step by step the correct procedures.
Description of the technology used in the Beasy 2000 system
To understand this ingenious device even better, let’s analyze its innovative technology in detail. The phases of the process include:
- the primary tank. Greywater settles in the primary tank where sedimentation solids accumulate at the bottom and lighter particles float on the surface. In this tank, sedimentation occurs, which is the pre-treatment phase of the entire process. The device also has an efficient effluent filter at the exit of the primary compartment before the water is channeled into the secondary compartment;
- the filtration system. The BIOROCK support material initiates the secondary treatment of the process. The filtration process, through the material itself, occurs in the treatment unit. Finally, aeration is ensured by natural ventilation through the BIOROCK material bed;
- discharge options (pump or gravity). If it is not possible to discharge the water by gravity, a pumping station helps send the water to the storage tank. Gravity discharge remains the best option as it does not require any electrical connection.
The capacity is 300 l/day, the flow rate is 300 l/day, and the primary tank consists of two compartments with an effluent filter.
Usage instructions
Now let’s provide some guidelines for the correct use of the Beasy system to optimize its performance. Only greywater from the shower and bathroom sink should enter the system. No other type of wastewater should be introduced into the device. To ensure proper functioning of the Beasy system, do not use toilet cleaners, bleach, or other chemical cleaning products for the sink or shower. However, the use of biodegradable and eco-friendly soaps for cleaning is allowed and even mandatory. It is not permissible to discharge solid bodies or other organic materials into the shower and sink. It is advisable to dose a pool chlorine tablet in the septic tank at least every 15 days. The state of the effluent filter should be checked every 3 months, and if it appears dirty, it should be washed in hot water or replaced. At least 2 inspections per year are required for the sedimentation tank and the percolation tank. The water that exits the Beasy system must be channeled into a tank dedicated exclusively to supplying toilet tanks. The tank must also have a water supply from the aqueduct to mix with the effluent, ensuring the perfect functioning of the plant system. It should be noted that the Beasy can treat incoming water with a maximum concentration of 1.5 mg/l of total surfactants.
The advantages
Now let’s list the main advantages guaranteed by the Beasy system:
- silent operation. The device does not produce annoying noises and operates absolutely silently;
- low management costs. Maintenance is minimal and requires few standard interventions throughout the year;
- the highest quality of outgoing effluents. Beasy utilizes a natural principle for purification, thus ensuring excellent quality water;
- ease of installation. Installation works are simple and can be completed in a short time;
- no visual impact and no bad odor. The device does not alter the aesthetics of the bathroom and does not emit any unpleasant odors;
- modular system suitable for higher flows. The device can easily adapt to any type of domestic system, from holiday homes to small families, for 2-6 A.E. (Equivalent Inhabitants);
- ecological technology. Beasy does not use energy or emit CO2 into the air, making it completely eco-sustainable.
Finally, it is worth noting that with the installation of Beasy, you can benefit from the Renovation Bonus, which allows you to obtain a substantial tax deduction on the purchase. For more details on the Renovation Bonus read here.
