Dora Baltea always chooses solutions designed and tailored for its clients. Analyzing the client's needs and the configuration of the surrounding environment is therefore a fundamental starting point for subsequently designing the installation of the ideal and most efficient system.
Today we discuss an exemplary case on the island of Favignana, in the Egadi archipelago, where a Dorabaltea Biowater treatment system with Biorock technology has been installed.
THE CONTEXT
The island has an area of approximately 19 km² and a coastline of 33 km characterized by rugged features and rich in cavities and caves. In ancient times, the name of Favignana was Egusa (Aegusa for the Latins), from the Greek Aigousa (Αἰγοῦσα), meaning “the one that has goats,” due to their abundance on the island.
Like all the smaller Italian islands, Favignana has always had to deal with the scarcity of fresh water due to the harsh nature of the land and its limited surface area. The few aquifers present are also very thin, and in the wells, fresh water is scarce and often brackish due to the infiltration of seawater. The inhabitants of the Egadi Islands have therefore learned over the centuries to manage the scarce and precious water resources.
To exacerbate the problem in Favignana is the high tourist influx, especially during the summer months, which is a source of work and valuable income for the island's inhabitants but at the same time leads to an increasing demand for water from accommodation facilities in quantities far exceeding what is naturally available.
With high summer temperatures and scarce seasonal rainfall, the Egadi Islands are among those that suffer the most from this discomfort: for this reason, they have represented an ideal study model for Dorabaltea to address and solve the problem.
THE INTERVENTION
The client has renovated a building to convert it into a B&B, paying particular attention to the sustainable use of water resources.
The authorization process was lengthy and constrained by the choice of a plant solution that would adapt to the intermittent use, the operation without electricity, but also with a quality of treated water suitable for reuse for irrigation.
The load of 15 equivalent inhabitants required the installation of a BIOWATER E marked EN12566 with certified performance in compliance with R.Eu 305/11, D.Lgs 152/06, DM185/03 Reuse of water, and the Water Protection Plan of the Sicilian Region.
The installation was very simple and did not require electromechanical equipment. The Dorabaltea Biowater treatment system with Biorock technology is unique in the world and allows for unique treatment performance without the aid of electricity.
The maintenance is almost nonexistent, energy costs are zero, the use of 100% recyclable material and the support for completely natural biological mass make the Dorabaltea system completely eco-compatible even in areas of unique environmental respect.
The approximately 3 cubic meters of treated water per day during peak season will allow for the natural irrigation and amendment of a garden area between 750 and 1000 square meters, without having to use groundwater, which is so precious on the Island of Favignana.
Dorabaltea® has a significant responsibility in the choice of treatment systems and positions itself in the market to all professionals, companies, and clients as a company made up of people whose primary goal is to identify the best solution in relation to customer needs while inevitably respecting the environment.
