European Union, new regulations for the recycling of wastewater for agricultural use

The European Commission is also committed to the recovery and recycling of wastewater. It proposes new regulations aimed at greater environmental respect combined with actual economic savings, in a perspective of sustainability and environmental harmony.

The proposal is to stimulate and facilitate the reuse of water in the EU for agricultural irrigation.  Through new regulations that will help farmers make the best possible use of non-potable wastewater, to alleviate water scarcity while protecting the environment and consumers.

The Commission's work primarily involves the identification of minimum requirements for the reuse of wastewater from urban wastewater treatment plants, regarding both microbiological elements and monitoring requirements focused on the frequency of controls and validation monitoring.

Setting and adhering to minimum requirements will ensure that the treated water obtained in accordance with the new regulations is safe for irrigation and ready for use.

There is also an important risk management assessment, to ensure that any additional risks are addressed, making the water safe for reuse.

A greater transparency is also necessary, so that the public has access to online information about water reuse practices in their respective Member States.

The reuse of water in the European Union can and must be enhanced and facilitated. Currently, the environmental impact and energy required for the extraction and transport of water are excessive. Even today, one-third of the EU territory experiences water stress issues throughout the year, and water shortages continue to be a significant concern for many EU Member States.

The situation is worsened by increasingly unpredictable weather conditions, particularly drought episodes, which have negative consequences on both the quantity and quality of water resources.

For all these reasons, the new EU regulations aim to optimize the use of water from urban wastewater treatment plants, providing a safe, sustainable, and economical alternative for water supply.

The new regulations that allow the use of non-potable wastewater also contribute to the savings of economic and environmental costs associated with creating new water supply sources.

The regulation proposed by the European Commission aims to alleviate water resource scarcity throughout the EU, in the context of adapting to climate change, ensuring that treated wastewater intended for agricultural irrigation is safe and protecting citizens and the environment.
