“PLASTIC INVASION”, plastic invasion, is the impactful title chosen by Orb Media to raise awareness about a new concerning discovery: the water in our oceans, freshwater, soil, and air is contaminated with plastic fibers. Researchers analyzed 159 samples of drinking water collected from various cities around the globe, finding microplastics in drinking water. Countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, and France report a lower rate of water contamination, although the presence has been detected in 72% of cases. The average number of fibers in half a liter of water ranges from 4.8 units in the United States to 1.9 in Europe. Data that leave one astonished and once again confirm how much humanity is responsible for the fate of the world. Experts claim to have sufficient data to demonstrate how concerning water pollution due to the presence of microplastics is for wildlife. We still do not know the effects on human health, but we can imagine them.
«We knew that this plastic somehow returned to us through the food chain. Now we discover that it can also do so through drinking water. Do we have an escape route?».
