The Municipality of Vicenza announced at the beginning of October the start of a widespread information campaign aimed at about 1,400 families and 340 businesses located in areas of the city not served by the sewer network. Those affected will receive a communication from the environmental department with important information regarding the compliance of domestic discharges. The environmental assessor Simona Siotto stated that those who are not aligned with the complex current national regulations will have time to regularize their position and avoid incurring heavy fines, from 6,000 to 60,000 euros. The issue is quite complex and concerns the possession of the certification of the compliance of the systems adopted for wastewater treatment. This authorization has only recently been included in the building permit, and therefore may not be present for older properties. Nevertheless, the Veneto Region's plan for water protection currently requires citizens to certify that the tanks used are those permitted by law. There are two possible scenarios:
- a simple renewal of the authorization for compliant systems, where present, at the cost of a 16 euro revenue stamp;
- the initiation of the technical adjustment for non-compliant systems within the next two years.
The Municipality of Vicenza's information campaign includes a first step dedicated to about 1,000 citizens and businesses in the areas not served by the sewer network located in districts 2, 3, and 4. Each subject will receive a letter inviting them to participate in training meetings. Citizens and businesses in districts 5 and 6 will be contacted in 2020, while districts 1 and 7 are not affected by the issue as they are covered by the sewer service.
