The Finnish west coast is an area of breathtaking nature, where however the harsh temperatures can remain below freezing for months. The snow on the trees creates beautiful winter landscapes, and during the cold season the hours of daylight are few, as the sun sets early (it is dark by 4 PM) and does not rise before late morning. In this area with evidently problematic climate, the installation of BIOROCK wastewater treatment systems at two school facilities became necessary, proving to be the ideal solution even in case of harsh temperatures.
First project:
Some issues were evident in the face of the need to install a new wastewater treatment plant to effectively meet the needs of students and teachers, for a user base of about 100 people. Since the wastewater treatment system is located next to the school and the playground, the initial requests for the replacement septic tank were silent operation and no bad odors. In addition to these points, the selected treatment system would have to cope with very cold winters and the high seasonality of the user base, completely interrupted during holiday periods and weekends.
Specifications:
The most suitable system was identified as the BIOROCK wastewater treatment plant, ideal for installation in tight spaces. The pre-existing tank, a simple septic tank connected to the sewer network, was emptied and cleaned to be used as primary treatment, and connected to a BIOROCK-E (now ECOROCK-3000) system with discharge into a nearby stream as the final disposal point for the treated water. The installation of the wastewater treatment plant, which took place in 2014, required two working days.
Second project:
An extension of the project carried out for this school was the installation of a new decentralized wastewater treatment system. Since the sewer network for the school and services is located in an elevated garden behind the building, the main uncertainties were immediately:
- where to install the wastewater treatment system
- where to discharge the effluent of the treated water
The BIOROCK system was identified right away as a reliable solution. A BIOROCK wastewater treatment plant, eco-friendly and without the use of electricity, was positioned on-site using a small excavator, before being installed near the car parking area in front of the school. The treated effluent flows away, thanks to gravity and without the need for any electric pump, along the slope adjacent to the parking lot, until it reaches a channel in a nearby agricultural field.
Specifications:
With a very low environmental impact and the ability to operate even without the use of electricity, the BIOROCK wastewater treatment solution was identified as the perfect septic system for this specific case. The selected system consists of a base pit ST-1-5000 BIOROCK followed by a treatment unit ECOROCK-3000.
