Highly impactful is the campaign implemented by the municipality of Collioure, a French locality situated in the Occitan region, to raise awareness among citizens about water pollution.
The French municipality has placed signs on the ground next to the manholes, which read: “Ne rien jeter, ne rien vider. La mer commence ici.” which means “Do not throw anything, do not empty anything. The sea starts here”.
The goal is to raise awareness among citizens, reminding them that cigarette butts, paper tissues, and chewing gum thrown into the manholes end up directly in their sea!
A small act of civility that greatly contributes to the fight against marine water contamination.
This awareness campaign, undoubtedly effective and impactful, is an initiative to be replicated that would help address the issue of littering:
improperly and illegally disposing of waste on public and even private land waste such as chewing gum, bottles and cans, beverage containers, pieces of paper and glass, cigarette butts, plastic bags, food scraps, food packaging, and small packaging in general without paying much attention…
